Kiln Plans Revised

So after taking into consideration comments from the ClayArt community, I have begun to make changes on my design. As you will see, the step-grate portion of the firebox has been extended further, and dropped lower. Now there is a clearly defined step up where the pottery can be stacked.

Still a work in progress... but it feels like I am getting closer to a sound kiln design. I will be adding mouse holes below the noborigama's side stoke grates, and reconsidering the height of each of the two steps up inside the kiln. Although it is smaller than most kilns of similar characteristics and design, I don't think that translates into short steps. I will see what I find out through more digging...

Have you made any headway on the plans or kiln?

So far I have only dug out the foundation and put down the first layer of brick. I haven't posted any pictures but will soon.

I just received the brick necessary to fully construct the kiln, so I will be beginning with the month of July. I am currently in Canada doing a residency.

Where in canada are you taking this residence? I have been talking to dick lehmen about a step down grate system for my kiln design. Have you fired with this before?
What kind of firing time do you suspect for your kiln?

I am in Medicine Hat, Alberta at the Medalta center.

I also did some email correspondence with Dick Lehman. He was extremely helpful. And the plans as they stand were changed on his recommendations.

As far as firing a step grate system, I have never... but I have heard that they are great from a number of people. And as far as firing time I really don't know. I would like to use it in the same manner as Dick does, loading it up with wood and letting is smolder all day before firing. After that, I am hoping to get it into the 18 to 24 hour range.

Mike,

Are things proceeding with the kiln? I am just building the kiln shed and hope to start work on the kiln over the winter and into the spring for a firing in the fall of 2012. Please post any pics with your project. Would like to travel and see the kiln when it's finished. Need a hand with a shift?
