The problem with small natural draft wood kilns is that wood has a long flame. If the kiln is not long enough, the heat of the flame ends up outside the kiln.

It looks like a lot of your heat is outside the chimney. Maybe a longer firebox would help.
I am curious about this... it is hard to find any information about changing flame length with by changing the firebox.
How do you think creating a longer firebox would remedy my runaway flame? I had considered making a shorter chimney.
